Both are 14 feet long, both are rated 14,000 lbs, and both tow the same way. The difference is weight and lift. This trailer is 3,420 lbs empty, which leaves 10,580 lbs of payload, roughly 3,500 lbs more than the other 14-footer. It also lifts on a single telescopic ram instead of a scissor frame underneath. Book this one when the load is heavy: gravel, wet soil, broken concrete.

It is one hydraulic cylinder mounted at the front of the box. It extends in stages, the way a radio antenna does, and pushes the box straight up. A scissor lift does the same job with a folding X-frame under the box instead. Both dump the load. The ram keeps the underside of the box clear and has fewer joints to grease.

Less than the box holds, and this catches people out. The steel box is about 5 cubic yards, but 5 cubic yards of gravel weighs close to 14,000 lbs, well past the 10,580 lb payload. Fill it about three quarters for gravel and wet soil, and closer to half for broken concrete. Light material like brush, shingles, or drywall you can fill right up. Loaded, the same as any of our 14K trailers: a 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck (F-250, F-350, Ram 2500/3500, Silverado 2500) with a 2 5/16-inch ball, a 7-pin connector, and a working electronic brake controller. Empty this trailer is 3,420 lbs, lighter than our other dump trailer, but a half-ton truck is still the minimum, and a brake controller is required by law either way.

The rear gate does three jobs. It swings open on side hinges so you can walk material out or load through the back. It drops flat to sit level with the floor when you are loading equipment up the ramps. And it can be latched at the top to spread, so the bottom swings out and gravel or sand meters onto the ground in an even strip as you pull forward. Set the gate before you load, never while the box is raised.

The rental includes the telescopic ram with its deep-cycle battery in the front tool box, the remote, a mesh tarp package, 7-foot slide-in ramps, four D-rings inside the box, a spare tire, and an 8,000 lb drop-leg jack. We do a hitch and safety check before you leave. The damage deposit is $500 and fully refundable when the trailer comes back in the same condition.
